Voleguard from Acorn Planting Products - Vole Guard Tree ProtectionAcorns vole guards are tree guards to protect newly planted or young trees from damage by voles. Vole Gaurds are a tightly rolled cylinder / tube made from brown tinted PVC plastic, which is split vertically and is then heat-treated to ensure that they holds their shape and retains sufficient overlap. Because they’ve been heat-treated to retain recoil strength, Acorn Voleguards can be pulled open to fit around the young tree and will then spring back into shape, enabling them to be simply pushed into the soil to create an effective barrier against vole attack. Some customers use a light cane when installing Vole guards around small trees, although generally the guard stands up on its own if correctly inserted into the soil. Acorn Voleguard comes in two heights – 20cm and 30cm.

PVC is fairly robust and, if left undisturbed, Acorn Voleguards will remain intact for a minimum of 3 years. However, when the diameter of the tree exceeds overall guard diameter (approx 60cm), an area of bark will become exposed and therefore vulnerable to possible damage, although ring-barking is not possible as only a small portion of the trunk is revealed.

Competitively priced, Acorn Vole guards effectively protect young trees from vole attack and are simple and easy to install. The Acorn Voleguard can be pushed into the soil to prevent voles from burrowing under the guard, particularly in a hard winter when food is scarce. Heat treating the Acorn Voleguard ensures it retains the desired diameter of 4-6cm, whereas some alternative guards have proven either to recoil too much (sometimes making a guard as small as 2-3cm diameter) or to be weak and easily blown off the tree.
